About Us > History

In 1964, Lyndon Johnson was President of the United States. The country was embroiled in the Vietnam War, and still reeling from the assassination of JFK, A.M. radio stations played songs by The Beatles; Ed Sullivan was Sunday evening television fare, most televisions received only four or five channels (color television was still fairly rare) and a gallon of gasoline sold for around 30 cents.

It was also the year that Steve Needel, the founder of the Firm, left KPMG Peat Marwick and, in true entrepreneur style - with $900 in the bank and a single client - opened the practice in Quincy Square. In 1971, Steve Needel and Gary Siddall merged their Quincy practices and shortly thereafter relocated the office to Hingham. The Firm continued to grow significantly through the late 1970's and in 1979, Susan Stone joined the Firm on a part-time basis to organize a tax department. Sue began her career at Price Waterhouse and had private industry experience as well. In 1981, Gary decided to relocate to the west coast and left the practice.

Jim Welch joined the Firm as an audit and accounting manager in 1980. He was responsible for developing the Firm's quality control procedures for the financial statement practice. Jim became a shareholder in 1981 and Sue Stone in 1982. The firm name was changed to Needel, Welch & Stone, P.C. in 1983 and the firm grew with the "Massachusetts miracle" of the 1980's. After outgrowing two Hingham locations, the office was moved to Rockland in 1988 at our present location.

Steve has retired as a shareholder, but continues on a limited part-time schedule and Sue is no longer with the firm. The leadership of the firm today consists of Jake Lynch, who joined the firm in 1979 and became a shareholder in 1989; Jim Bailey, who joined the firm in 1986 and became a shareholder in 1996; Kevin White, who joined the firm in 1986 and became a shareholder in 1997; and Jim Clarkson who joined the firm in 1993 and became a shareholder in 2006. Our leadership team profiles detail the skills, experience and commitment that each of these individuals bring to our clients.

Today, Needel, Welch & Stone, P.C. serves privately-owned companies, not-for-profit organizations and individuals across a variety of industries. In addition to traditional accounting and tax services, we provide an array of consulting services established based on the devotion to meeting the needs of our clients.
